Balancing It All: The Silent Costs of Being a Woman | Shivani Jain

Shivani Jain The Silent Costs of Being a Woman
Have you ever felt the weight of expectations you never agreed to yet silently carried? Women worldwide navigate this reality daily, balancing roles and sacrifices that often go unnoticed.

What Are the Unwritten Expectations?

From a young age, women are conditioned to play roles that often demand silent sacrifices—as daughters, wives, mothers, professionals, and friends. Though unwritten, these expectations have the power to profoundly shape lives.

The Dutiful Daughter

As daughters, women often find themselves silently fulfilling expectations to be respectful, obedient, and selfless. The unsaid rule prioritizes the family’s needs above their aspirations. They are expected to uphold family honour, be emotionally available, and adapt to traditions without question.

Daughters are often expected to marry according to their family’s choice, with little say in when or whom they marry.

How usually have you seen a young woman put aside her dream of studying abroad because her parents needed her close by? Perhaps she works extra hours to support her family financially or takes on the emotional labour of being the “peacemaker” in household conflicts.

While she loves her family deeply, these sacrifices go unnoticed because it’s “just what good daughters do.” Yet each deferred dream leaves behind a quiet ache, a void that echoes long after the sacrifices are made.

As daughters grow into wives, the weight of expectations shifts but rarely lightens.

The Perfect Wife

Marriage often brings a new chapter of unwritten rules. Society paints an image of the “perfect wife”—a woman who maintains a beautiful home, supports her husband’s dreams, and never falters in her patience or kindness. There’s an expectation to balance tradition with modernity, to succeed in her career while also excelling as a homemaker.

But what about her dreams? Maybe she’s quietly letting go of her ambitions to follow her spouse’s career path. She is also expected to seek validation from her husband’s parents and extended family, often suppressing her own needs and desires to gain their approval.

Perhaps she’s battling loneliness in a new city, unable to express her struggles because she feels it might “burden” her partner. Each time she brushes off her fatigue to cook a meal or suppresses her frustration to maintain peace, it chips away at her inner self.

Each time she suppresses her own frustrations to keep the peace or brushes off exhaustion to meet another expectation, she chips away at her own identity. The narrative of the ‘supportive wife’ masks the cost of these invisible sacrifices.

These sacrifices often cost her identity and personal growth, perpetuated by the expectation of being a ‘supportive wife.’

The Selfless Mother

Motherhood is often seen as the epitome of selflessness. The world expects mothers to be ever-available, endlessly nurturing, and uncomplaining. From sleepless nights to sacrificing personal space, women are conditioned to believe that their worth as mothers lies in putting their children’s needs above their own.

Motherhood is a 24-hour job. A mother often plays the role of a doctor, teacher, nanny, and countless others without a break. She cannot express her frustration after a tiring day without being judged or dismissed.

Have you ever noticed how a mother’s hobbies slowly disappear? The painter sets aside her brushes, the reader shelves her books, and the athlete hangs up her gear—all to ensure her children’s lives are enriched. She will skip meals to ensure her family is fed and stretch her energy to the breaking point to manage every detail of their lives.

Yet these sacrifices often come at the cost of their mental health, with many mothers reporting chronic exhaustion and feelings of isolation.

Her sacrifices are often romanticized, yet we rarely pause to ask: what has she lost in this journey?

The Tireless Professional

In the workplace, women often feel pressured to work twice as hard to prove their worth. They may take on additional responsibilities, remain available after hours, or downplay their personal lives to avoid being labelled less committed.

Yet, women face gender biases that limit their recognition and career growth. It’s often assumed that they cannot handle higher roles because they are seen as the “weaker gender.”

This bias isn’t just personal—it stems from systemic inequalities that perpetuate the myth of women being less capable of leadership roles.

Have you ever heard a woman apologize for stepping away from a meeting to attend to her child? Or stay silent when overlooked for a promotion because she fears being seen as “too demanding”? The tightrope walk between professional excellence and societal expectations is exhausting.

These sacrifices go unnoticed, yet they come at the cost of her mental and emotional well-being.

The Loyal Friend

In friendships, women are often expected to be the emotional anchors who listen, check in, and support others. However, today’s fast-paced life brings additional challenges. Many women lose touch with their friends or set aside plans to prioritize family and work responsibilities.

The unwritten expectation of balancing family, career, and social life often leaves little time for genuine connections.

Friendships, once a source of joy, often become victims of the constant juggle of responsibilities, leaving many women feeling isolated.

The Cost of Silent Sacrifices

These silent sacrifices might seem small when viewed individually, but over time, they accumulate. They can lead to feelings of resentment, burnout, or even a loss of identity.

Women often forget that while caring for others is admirable, it’s equally important to care for themselves. Women are usually expected not to be “demanding” of their needs, further sidelining their emotional well-being. While she tries to maintain balance, her health and happiness are frequently overlooked.

The cost is not just personal; it’s societal. When women suppress their voices and needs, the world loses out on their full potential. Their creativity, innovation, and leadership remain untapped, hidden behind layers of silent sacrifices.

When women’s voices are suppressed, the world loses access to their full potential—untapped creativity, leadership, and innovation remain buried under layers of silent sacrifices.

Breaking the Silence

So, how can we begin to change this narrative?

First, we must recognize these unwritten expectations and acknowledge women’s daily sacrifices. Open conversations about these pressures can create awareness and foster empathy.

It’s also essential for women to prioritize their well-being. Saying “no” when necessary, asking for help, and setting boundaries are acts of strength, not selfishness.

Imagine a world where women felt supported to pursue their dreams without guilt, to share their burdens without judgment, and to live authentically without the weight of societal expectations.

A Call to Build Confidence

To all the women reading this: your sacrifices matter, but so do your dreams. Build your self-confidence by valuing your worth and not seeking validation from others.

Even if people comment or criticize, let their words not define your choices or self-worth. You are more than the roles you play—you are a person deserving of love, respect, and fulfilment.

And to everyone else: take a moment to appreciate the women in your life. Recognize their efforts, listen without judgment, and support them in reclaiming their time and identity.

Let’s move toward a future where women’s silent sacrifices are replaced by shared responsibilities and celebrated individuality.

Every woman deserves to thrive—not just survive—in every role she plays.
