Symbolism Over Opulence

Vallabh Chitnis - IntuiWell - Leadership Lesson Symbolism over opulence

The most powerful diplomatic signal last week wasn’t a speech. It was a Toyota Fortuner.

Everyone saw PM Modi riding with President Putin in Delhi. But did you notice the car?

They left the Range Rover (British) and the Mercedes (German) behind. They even left Putin’s own $10M armored Aurus Senat empty in the convoy.

Instead, two of the world’s most powerful leaders rode in a white Toyota Fortuner (MH registered, Made in India).

Why?

1. The “Official” Reason (Logistics):

The armored limos don’t have a 3rd row. The Fortuner does. To speak privately, they needed space for interpreters. A masterclass in choosing Utility over Luxury.

2. The “Real” Lesson (Strategic Symbolism):

In leadership, Everything is a Signal.

At a time when the West has sanctioned Russia, putting President Putin in a British or German car would have been a PR disaster (bad optics).

By choosing a Fortuner, a silent but deafening message was sent:

  • To the West: We are Independent. Your sanctions or alliances won’t bog us down.
  • To India: We trust what we build. (The Fortuner is a staple of Indian roads.)

The Leadership Takeaway:

Great leaders obsess over the “small” choices: the car, the venue, the vendor, because they know those details shout their values louder than any mission statement.

Are your “small choices” contradicting your big strategy?
