The Trouble Threshold Model

Vallabh Chitnis - IntuiWell - The Trouble Threshold Model

We’re weird.
We misfire our emotions, blowing up at coffee queues while ignoring life-altering decisions.

We rage at:
– A slow barista
– A rude email
– A delayed flight

We avoid:
– The health check we’ve been putting off
– The bank balance we refuse to check
– The hard talk with our partner

Small problems feel safe to fight.
Big problems demand courage.

The Trouble Threshold Model

1. Real Trouble (Red)
Life-altering events threatening health, safety, or stability.
Examples: Serious illness, house fire, job loss.

2. Inconvenience (Yellow)
Temporary external disruptions.
Examples: Delayed flight, power outage, tech issues.

3. Annoyance (Green)
Minor emotional triggers from expectations or mood.
Examples: Rude email, slow barista.

How to Label Any Situation
Does it threaten my health, safety, or stability?
YES → Real Trouble
NO + External → Inconvenience
NO + Internal → Annoyance

How to Tackle Each
1. Real Trouble → Stop non-critical tasks, activate support, and take decisive action.
2. Inconvenience → Find a workaround, accept limits, keep moving.
3. Annoyance → Pause, reframe, let it go.

Most things don’t deserve your panic.
Don’t spend your emotional budget on trivia.
Save it for the crises that truly matter.

Right now, name one thing you’ve been overreacting to and downgrade it.
